To get a driver’s license in Georgia you should pass a vision test, a knowledge exam and the road test. You will also need to submit several required documents to show your legal existence in the USA.

But, depending on your age, there are three types of license you can obtain:

  1. Class CP instructional permit. This is for teenagers from 15 to 18 years old

Georgia Driver License Classes

In the state of Georgia, there are almost 6 license classes, and for each license type, there’s a corresponding type of instruction permit.

Class A Driver License

To clarify, a class A license allows you to operate any combination vehicle with a GVWR greater than 26,000 pounds, provided that the GVWR of the towed vehicle is more than 10,000 pounds.

Class B Driver License

To clarify, class B allows you to operate any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds.

Class C (commercial) Driver’s License

That is to say, class C (commercial) is for operating vehicles carrying hazardous materials and with a GVWR less than 26,001 pounds, transporting 16 or more persons (including the driver).
These class A, B, and C licenses are commercial.

Class C Driver License

In short, a class C driver’s license is the basic driver’s license for automobile drivers. It allows you to operate a single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) less than 26,000 pounds, tow a vehicle with a GVWR of fewer than 10,000 pounds.

Moreover, use vehicles for recreational, camping, or travel purposes and to drive an autocycle (three-wheeled motor vehicle with a steering wheel).

Class D Driver License

In short, a class D driver’s license is a provisional license for teenagers. You can upgrade your class D license to class C at the age of 18.
These two class C and D licenses are non-commercial.

Class M Driver License

In short, the class M driver license allows you to operate a motorcycle on Georgia’s public roadways. But, you may get a motorcycle endorsement qualification that is added to your existing commercial or noncommercial driver’s license. This will allow you to operate motorcycles also.

How to apply

  1. Firstly, you should apply in person. For that visit your local DDC Customer Service Center.
  2. Secondly, visit the center with your parent and fill the application form. Your parent should sign the form with you.
  3. After that, pass a vision test. Your visual acuity readings should not be below 20/60 even with corrective lenses, and a field of vision not less than 140 degrees.
  4. Then pay $10 and pass the knowledge test.
  5. If you pass the test, take a photo of yourself and you will receive your permit within 30 days by mail.

  • And a Certificate of School Enrollment

The Class CP instructional permit is valid for two years. You can apply for the full class C or class D license or renew it to be able to drive in the state of Georgia.

Class D Provisional License

You can apply and obtain a provisional license if you have a CP instructional permit for at least 1 year.

It will allow you to drive alone. But if it is between midnight and 5:00 AM for the first 6 months it is not allowed you to drive alone.

For the next 6 months, you can’t carry more than a passenger under the age of 21, except your family members.

After a year, you can’t carry more than 3 passengers under the age of 21, except your family members.

How to apply

  1. Firstly, complete a driver’s education course. If you are under the age of 17 you should complete the course.
  2. Secondly, practice driving. With your instructional permit, practice supervised driving for at least 40 hours, at least 6 hours of which are at night.
  3. Complete an Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (ADAP) class at your high school.
  4. After that, visit your local Customer Service Center and fill the application form. Your parent should be with you, as he/she needs to sign the form too.
  5. Then pass a vision test. Your visual acuity readings should not be below 20/60 even with corrective lenses, and a field of vision not less than 140 degrees.
  6. And, pay $10 to receive your license.

The provisional license will be valid for 5 years. However, when you turn 18, you should upgrade your provisional license to a Class C full adult driver’s license.

Class C Full Driver’s License

If you already have a provisional license you can just upgrade it to the full class C license. But, if you are 18 and don’t have any type of license, learn how to apply.

How to apply

  1. Firstly, schedule an appointment at your local DDS Customer Service Center. You should fill the application in person.
  2. Secondly, pass a vision test. Your visual acuity readings should not be below 20/60 even with corrective lenses, and a field of vision not less than 140 degrees.
  3. After that, pass the knowledge test then pass the road test.
  4. Take a photo of yourself.
  5. Pay $32 and take your license.

Your full class C driver’s license will be valid for 8 years.

Georgia Driver License Renewal

In short, it is easier to renew your DL in person. Because there are many restrictions for online or by mail renewals.

To renew your DL firstly schedule an appointment at your local DDS Customer Service Center.

You will need to pay $32 as a renewal fee. Moreover, if you are going to transfer your DL from another state to Georgia, you should pay $32.
