Georgia Contractor License Classifications

Georgia Contractor License Classifications

Just like in other US states, the state of Georgia has some requirements for contractors. Whether you are a general or residential contractor, the state will ask you to go through the established licensing process. It is the very first step towards being able to perform contractor works in the state legally.

In addition, the Georgia State Licensing Board for Residential and General Contractors organizes the contractor licensing process. Therefore, an applicant must submit all license application and related forms to the respective body.

Georgia Contractor License Classifications

Georgia has two main contractor license categories for contractors: general and residential. To understand what each category entails and represents, continue reading.

General Contractor License

This license does not have or call for any limitations (for example, financial) connected with the type of contractor work. Therefore, a general contractor can fix, form, model, or perform general contracting obligations on residential or commercial properties. Moreover, a contractor can choose who to contract for, what job to undertake, submit a bid or a proposal.

The license, in short, allows doing contractor work on private and private, commercial, institutional, industrial buildings/structures.

To sum up, a general contractor license makes it possible to perform any work, which requires state licensure. A general contractor license, however, does not allow performing electrical, plumbing, conditioned air, low voltage, or utility contracting. For such cases, a specialty trade license is necessary to allow this type of contractor work performed.

Limited Tier General Contractor License

This license, in short, permits all the above-mentioned rights and areas of contracting work. However, the type of allowed work has its limitations and it should not exceed $500,000.

Limited Service Specialty Contractor License

There are some contractors, who perform limited, specialty contractor work for different kinds of work. Each specialty trade license has its own requirements, duties and responsibilities, thereby allowing limited work.

To make it more clear, an individual does not necessarily have to be a licensed residential or general contractor in order to perform a specialty service. On the contrary, having only a valid permit, as well as corresponding with the legal requirements of the given specialty trade is enough. Hence, there is a need to adhere to national, state, and local codes and ordinances.
